After a couple of changes of ownership, during which it assumed her last name, it was requisitioned by the Italian Royal Navy during the Second World War and armed with a massive anti-aircraft gun in the stern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While sailing in the seas of southern Italy, it collided with a mine to sink off the coast of Gallipoli.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The wreck was tracked down and discovered by a team of divers led by Andrea Costantini about ten years ago and thanks to an accurate historical reconstruction through the reports of the war bulletins it was possible to identify it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This giant of the sea lies on a sandy bottom at about 77 meters, in navigation attitude and is totally intact.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-3' class='gallery galleryid-8272 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/www.underwatertales.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/briefing-caterina-madre.jpg'><img width=\"1200\" height=\"1600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.underwatertales.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/briefing-caterina-madre.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.underwatertales.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/briefing-caterina-madre.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.underwatertales.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/briefing-caterina-madre-1152x1536.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p class=\"p1\">The north wind that cooled Otranto the previous day and that forced us to fight against the current here in Santa Caterina is imperceptible. The steamer appeared to us in all its majesty long before our impact.
